    108 reduces to a single digit of 9 (1+0+8 = 9) which is the number of universal consciousness (Mentioned as Brahman in Vedas)

    The reason for this is that 9 when multiplied by any number remains as 9 and does not get modified.

    Eg

    9 *2 = 18 = 1+ 8 = 9
    9*3 = 27 = 2+ 7 = 9

    And so forth

    The universal consciousness is never modified as all modifications are of nature and not consciousness.

    Hence it is auspicious to chant a mantra 108 times (We basically create 108 waves of a particular energetic pattern).
